Webvisions 2007: Social media strategies for your organization
This was another great session from Jeremiah the web strategist. He discussed web marketing strategies for organizations, strategies using new social media. Some notes:
- He talked about the Subservient Chicken web promotion.
- He called the Cluetrain Manifesto a must read for marketers.
- The importance of blogs in search engine ranking, like how searching for Dell support used to bring up an anti-Dell blog.
- He had a list of steps, number 6 was my favorite, “Gently align with corporate values.” He suggested that corporations cannot send a corporate message into social media and have it stay, rigidly, the same. Rather corporations have to let their community shape that message.
- I also liked his description of “Organic Bloggers.” These are bloggers from a corporation who blog, but not as “official” company representatives. In other words, they blog, but the company may not know about them. The problem is that these organic bloggers often say something about the corporation, even if the corporation doesn’t know about it.
- He also mentioned Dell’s IdeaStorm, where Dell users can specify features they want to see on Dell products. Because of these suggestions, Dell will soon be coming out with Linux machines.
