Webvisions 2007: The Secrets of Effective Communication
Part college lecture, part self-help session, this session run by Monne Smith was very good. There was no PowerPoint, and that ended up being a nice counterbalance to the tech-heavy conference.
- Smith suggested that most employers don’t worry as much about tech skills, as they do about soft (communication) skills which are more difficult to teach.
- If 75% of communication is non-verbal, then electronic communication is missing 75% of the message (always a good point).
- Smith suggested that fear and anger are the most difficult emotions fort people to deal with and most conflict can be attributed to those emotions.
- She suggested telling people how you feel, being honest, and owning your emotions.

Monne lives those words, too.
She’s a sweet woman who really does follow those words she spoke.
Her manner of presenting without the use of a set of slides really caught my tech crew off guard! : ) I didn’t get to see her whole presentation, but I hope we got a good audio recording of it.
